Yes, now, there are mentions of it on the 3 major media network websites. But, the story is nothing but an easily-glanced-over link.

Thousands of people protested, and to date, more than 1,000 have been arrested. Many have been brutalized, like the now-infamous Peppergate. The protestors have been using non-violent resistance, such as going limp when being arrested, or, when in crowds, holding onto others to prevent the police from taking them and subsequently arresting them.

For 10 years, in the climate filled with fear, ignorance, and hate… I’ve been asking myself, “Is there any hope for America? Are we all doomed to dig our own graves?”… and only now, after a a staggering unemployment rate and financial-system failures, I have hope.

To quote Tyler Durden: “Only after we lose everything are we free to do anything.”

The protestors call themselves the 99%, referring to the 99% of the population struggling to get by in this challenging economy, while the remaining 1% are living it up without feeling any of its effects. The idea they are trying to get across is that we do not have to stand for this extreme social and economic inequality any longer, and there is something that can be done about it.

The protestors in New York have been calling for citizens of every major city in the country to make a similar stand, and as of September 23rd, citizens began to protest in Chicago at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago building located on LaSalle and Jackson.

It means, popularizing the idea of revolution within the large scale media.  So, instead of accepting a nation obsessed with Jersey Shore and American Idol, we start creating and reinforcing the community that shares ideas and dissenting views that many, many people hold dear.  Even if the mainstream television market focuses on mediocrity, there’s a large number of people who differ from that ideology.  The commercial consumerism controls many, but it does not control all, and the ones that it does not control will ultimately make the difference within American society.

The idea of popularizing revolutionary views may differ from the main stream conception of what media and society should be.  But now, in the midst of a recession, in the midst of the rubble of an out of control financial system, in the midst of a popped housing bubble that have left hundreds of thousands in foreclosure… the ones who care, and differ from the outdated consumer culture, will be the ones to bring true change.

If you have a hard time believing this, simply look around the world.  Revolutions have been sparked by grass roots movements, and other nations have been spurred into action simply by being aware of these revolutionary movements.  Because the U.S. is declining, and is no longer the sole superpower, we have an opportunity to band together and create meaningful social change within our society.  The Age of Information is affecting us all, and we must seize the opportunity to make it work for the benefit of all middle and lower class Americans.

If we so choose, the age of “rich getting richer, poor getting poorer” can be abolished, and a new, hopeful vision of the future can be established from the broken pieces.

This post is only a small snippet of the large burden to bear, to push off, to rise above.  And, this time is ours.
